Sir Gareth Southgate has declared that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, explaining that it would be tough to recreate the unique sense of purpose he experienced as England’s manager.

Southgate indicated his intention to focus his energy toward working with young people and countering what he called a dominant downbeat story currently prevalent in the country.

Pursuing Fresh Opportunities Outside of Coaching

Speaking on air, Southgate was prompted regarding speculation linking him with open coaching positions in the top flight and abroad.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

A Passion for Role Models

Ahead of the release of his forthcoming publication, his leadership-focused book, he shared that he is deeply committed about offering guidance for young people, drawing on lessons from his period as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

He feels that his time coaching England, during which the team transformed from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Raising Children and Guiding Young People

Drawing on his family life, Southgate observed: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He continued: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Conflict

He asserted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often highlights disagreement.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he stated. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

Southgate’s new release, titled Dear England, is scheduled to present deeper reflections on guidance and public spirit based on his distinguished career.
