Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Irish Team But Joe McCarthy Left Out
Returning manager Andy Farrell has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland team for the autumn matches, but Joe McCarthy misses out.
The captain, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to face the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.
Second row McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the first Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.
Northern province forward Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the summer tour.
Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "reserves".
After facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous meeting, the team host Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again compete for the first-choice number 10 position. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, with the two players set to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming URC game at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 selected with Farrell deciding not to calling up Leinster's Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international wins over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at full-back.
Wingers Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the sole new name in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has started a couple of his province's three United Rugby Championship games so far and played in Ireland A's defeat by England in Bristol previously.
McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a international appearance.
Munster lock Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province lock Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris should the captain fails to recover full fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.
The national team will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
