Both Deceased Students Revealed in the Ivy League School Attack as Law Enforcement Persist in Hunt for Gunman.

Both young individuals who were killed in Saturday’s violent attack in Providence were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their shooter continued following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person questioned in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was called “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a service on Sunday.

Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also shared sympathies publicly, remarking: “It's indescribable. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, especially her parents.”

An International Student

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his initial year at the Ivy League university, family members said.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were hurt in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Officials stated by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a search at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you must reassess and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”

Ongoing Concerns

The assailant opened fire inside a lecture hall in the engineering facility on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a police source informed the media outlet.

Officers that searched the lodging recovered two firearms and two ammunition clips when the suspect was taken into custody, the news agency reported.

Those Hurt

Regarding the nine injured, one pupil was allowed to go home, stated the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, police said on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Cook was honored at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was a shining example in that institution as well.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings documented across the United States so far in 2025, according to statistics. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
